Leak Detection After Rainfall in Baton Rouge

Leak Detection After Rainfall

While Baton Rouge rarely sees snow during the winter months, we do receive some rain. Although June is our wettest month, it is still important to be aware of how water and rainfall can affect your home – specifically your foundation.

Leak Detection In Baton Rouge

Foundation leaks can result from a number of causes and can wreak havoc on your home. From our detection experts, here are just a few ways rain and excess water can lead to foundation leaks in your home.

  • Since rainfall is not extremely common during the winter, when it does occur it can easily find our rain gutters unprepared. Dirt and debris can build up in your gutters, especially during the fall months, where it can cause blockages and obstruct the flow of water. Failing to clean out your gutters at least twice a year (we recommend before winter and after spring) can result in water backing up and spilling out down the exterior walls of your home. When water is not channeled through gutters to downspouts and directed away from your home, it will pool up right around the foundation which makes your home more susceptible to water leaks.
  • If there are any cracks in your foundation (which occur naturally over time as a result of settling), water that has built up around the foundation of your home can work its way inside. As it pushes its way through, that water can actually cause cracks to grow and expand, resulting in more water entry and so on and so forth. Water leaks can not only weaken your foundation, but also affect other structural components of your home like causing rot in support beams, deteriorate drywall, soak insulation, and promote mold growth.
  • A failing sump pump can let ground level water rise up into your basement and leak into your home. Your sump pump is one of the best lines of defense against water leaks, so it is important to make sure it is functioning correctly. In the event that the power goes out, you should have a backup power source for your sump pump so that it can continue to pump away excess water and prevent leaks from occurring.
  • Improper or inadequate lawn and soil grading around your home can also increase the risk of water leaks in your foundation. In order to prevent water from building up, pooling, or standing next to your foundation, your soil or lawn should slope away from your home creating a natural channel for water to flow down.
